MKE Week 3 – Your Past Does Not Define Your Future

*Finding the courage to begin again through faith, guidance, and the belief that change is possible.*

I want to share something today that I wish someone had told me many years ago.

**We don’t have to live in fear, and we don’t have to figure everything out on our own.**

I know what it’s like to feel unprepared for life. There was a time when I lacked confidence, struggled with my self-image, and was afraid to stand in front of others and speak. I didn’t know how to build meaningful relationships, and I often questioned whether I had anything valuable to offer.

Growing up, I was taught to do what I was told rather than encouraged to think for myself. When I entered adulthood and began raising children, I realized how many life skills I hadn’t learned. I faced situations I wasn’t prepared for and often didn’t even know what questions to ask.

Looking back, I wish someone had told me that **there is no shame in not knowing what we haven’t been taught.**

We all begin life from different starting points. Some people have guidance, encouragement, and support from an early age. Others must discover those things as they experience life. The good news is that where we begin doesn’t have to determine where we end up.

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that we don’t have to walk through life’s challenges alone. There are people who genuinely care, people who have faced similar struggles, and people willing to share their wisdom and encouragement. Sometimes we simply need to muster the courage to reach out and ask for help.

And that’s where faith becomes so important.

When we feel uncertain or don’t know where to turn, it’s okay to lament in prayer. We can speak honestly to Father God about our fears, our struggles, and the guidance we need. We can ask Him earnestly to lead us toward people who can help us grow and for the wisdom to recognize those who have our best interests at heart.

I believe Father God often works through people who are willing to love, encourage, and serve others. Sometimes the guidance we need comes through a friend, a mentor, a teacher, or someone who has already walked a similar path.

The right people won’t try to live our lives for us or make all our decisions. They’ll help us recognize our abilities, develop confidence, and learn to trust ourselves.

**That’s the kind of encouragement I wish I’d had, and it’s the kind I want to offer others today.**

I’m no longer the woman who was afraid to speak or who believed she had nothing of value to share. I’ve grown in confidence, gained knowledge, and learned to think for myself. I don’t have every answer, but I’ve discovered that my experiences, even the difficult ones, have taught me lessons worth sharing.

I believe our challenges can become stepping stones toward discovering who we truly are. They don’t have to define us, and they don’t have to prevent us from creating something meaningful with our lives.

Growth doesn’t happen overnight. Often, it begins with one small decision: asking for help, learning something new, replacing an old habit, or choosing to believe that a different future is possible.

If I could sit across from my younger self today, I would tell her that she is worthy of love, guidance, encouragement, and respect. I would remind her that she doesn’t need to know everything and that asking for help is a sign of wisdom, not weakness.

And that’s a message I believe all of us need to hear at some point in our lives.

**We are worthy of love, respect, and encouragement right where we are.** We don’t have to carry shame over what we haven’t learned or the mistakes we’ve made along the way.

We can turn to our Heavenly Father for wisdom and direction, remain open to the people He may place in our paths, and find the courage to take the next step.

One day, the lessons we’re learning now may become the very wisdom someone else needs.

That’s the hope I carry for my own life: to use what I’ve experienced and learned to encourage others who may be struggling with the same things I once faced. I know what it’s like to need someone who believes in us, and I know how much that encouragement can mean.

Every life matters. Every voice has value. And none of our stories are finished simply because we’ve experienced difficult chapters.

**We don’t have to remain afraid, and we don’t have to do everything alone.**

My hope is that we will allow Father God to guide our steps, believe that change is possible, and always remember:

**Our past does not define our future.**
